GILBERT - A popular event that has crowds flocking to Gilbert is planned for the end of this month, and is expected to draw people, not only from across West Virginia, but from several surrounding states as well.

The “Skirmish on the River” is an annual event that features re-enactment battle scenes from the Civil War. These portrayals include period uniformed soldiers and artillery fire, especially from an antique battle cannon.

The event is scheduled to take place on the property adjacent to the Larry Joe Harless Center on April 25-27. According to coordinator Reuben Mitchell, the schedule for the three-day event is as follows:

On April 25, an Educational Day for School Children will be held with several schools committed to participate. During this time, all civil war campsites will be open to the public.

On April 26, events will begin at 9 a.m. with another chance for the public to view the campsites, to be followed by an officers’ meeting at 10:30 a.m. A Ladies’ Tea will take place at noon inside the LJHC Banquet Room. The first battlefield scene is planned for 2 p.m., and will be followed by a dinner for the re-enactors at 5 p.m. A Civil War Period Dance is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The popular night cannon firing will be held at 9:30 p.m., and the camp is scheduled to close for the night at 11 p.m.

On April 27, a breakfast for the re-enactors will begin at 8 a.m., and the campsites will again be open to the public, beginning at 9 a.m. A church service will be held at 10 a.m., and the final re-enactment of the Skirmish on the River will start at 1 p.m.

“Come out and see how your ancestors lived during that turbulent time,” Mitchell said. “We welcome everyone to come and see an important part of our local history.”
