The coaches for the 2nd Annual Consol Energy WV-KY Senior All-Star game have been named.
Longtime Logan High School head coach Mark Hatcher will guide the West Virginia boy’s squad, while legendary Kentucky coach Jim Hicks of Shelby Valley will guide the Bluegrass squad.
For the girls’ teams, Shannon Lewis, who has guided Huntington St. Joe to six straight Class A state championships, will coach the Mountain State squad, while Wes Hatcher of Pike County Central (Mark’s nephew) will coach the Kentucky team.
The game will be held Saturday, April 19 at Mingo Central High School. The girls’ game will start at 6 p.m., while the boys’ game will begin at approximately 8 p.m.
“There will be a 3-point shooting contest and a slam dunk contest,” said Steve “Tib” Cook, one of the directors of the event.
“We have a lot of local talent that has been invited to play,” Cook said. “Players from teams such as Tug Valley, Mingo Central, Westside, Logan, Chapmanville, Belfry and other Pike County schools have been asked to play.”
They will also be having an all-day youth all-star event. Anyone interested in entering a team to play can e-mail Cook at email@example.com.
There is no entry fee for youth teams and each squad will be guaranteed at least two games.
“This game has already gained a lot of notoriety. We have several college coaches that will be in attendance,” Cook said.
Last year the West Virginia boys won the inaugural game, while the Kentucky gals won in the initial game.
“A hospitality room, which is the Mingo Central way, will be served for each team upon the conclusion of their games,” Cook said.
“We are hoping to make this a statewide event and attract all of the top talent from our state to showcase against the Kentucky squad,” Cook stated.
A large crowd is once again expected for the basketball extravaganza.
