The 2014 Williamson Daily News Girl’s All-Area team has several top-notch players.
The team was released today after tabulations of the coach’s votes from four schools – Mingo Central, Tug Valley, Belfry and Phelps.
Leading the way is three returning members of last year’s team with Mingo Central’s Ashley Curry, along with Tug Valley’s Hannah Armstrong and Adreana Vance.
Curry was one of the leading scorers in the Class AA Cardinal Conference. She fired in 14 ppg. and pulled down 11 rebounds. The 6’1” junior center has attracted some college attention. She also blocked an average of two shots per game.
Longtime veteran hoops Coach Clay Campbell feels Curry can definitely play at the next level.
The Tug Valley duo helped the Lady Panthers make it to the state tournament in Charleston.
Armstrong, a 5-11 senior center, averaged 15 ppg. and 10 rebounds per game, while battling a back injury.
Vance, a junior point guard, also missed several games because of a hamstring injury. She averaged 16 ppg., dished out 6 assists and had 6 rebounds per contest.
They played for first year head coach Maxine Colegrove.
Phelps’ senior Caitlyn Norman averaged 17.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.3 assists and 2 steals for the Lady Hornets of Coach J. R. Vanhoose.
Emily Baker, a junior forward, led Belfry in scoring with a13 ppg. average and the 60th District championship. Baker also pulled down 7 rebounds per game. She has also received interest from several colleges, according to Coach Kevin Deskins.
On the Honorable Mention list is - Phelps: Donessa Maynard (Jr.) ; Mingo Central: Hannah Church (Jr.), Kiearia Hammond (Jr.); Tug Valley: Emily Baisden (So.), Katie Robinson (So.) ; and Belfry: Candace Gilman (Jr.), Paige Goff (Jr.), Jaden Cisco (Jr.).
