A high speed chase involving Kentucky State Police and a man on a motorcycle resulted in a Cawood man facing charges, including fleeing from police.
Wesley B. Smith, 22, was arrested by KSP Trooper Danny Caudill on Monday.
According to the citation, Caudill saw Smith riding a motorcycle on U.S. 421 with expired registration plates. Caudill turned on his lights and attempted a traffic stop, but Smith kept going, according to police.
The citation also states Caudill pursued the motorcycle from the Waldon Road Bridge on U.S. 421 to Qualls Road at Cawood at speeds in excess of 120 mile per hour.
According to the citation, Smith hid his motorcycle behind his great-grandmother’s residence and hid inside his grandfather’s house.
The citation further stated Smith eventually surrendered to police, but could not produce any paperwork for the motorcycle. Smith’s operator’s license was valid, but his motorcycle permit came up suspended.
Smith surrendered to police without further incident.
Smith was charged with speeding 26 mph or more over the speed limit, reckless driving, no registration plates, no registration receipt, failure of owner to maintain required insurance, operating on a suspended or revoked operator’s license, first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle).
Smith was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
