MONTGOMERY - Each week WVU Tech athletics honors two athletes and are proud to announce the Golden Bear Star Performers of the Week for February 26-March 5. Men’s and women’s basketball guards junior Leon Cooper, Jr. and freshman Elizabeth Evans have recieved this recognition.
Women’s basketball split this past week, 1-1 with a victory over Washington Adventist University (75-59) and a loss to Bluefield College (Va.) to take their record to 9-13. Evans combined for 24 points this week, including five three-pointers, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
The Mingo County native is averaging 10.1 points per game and has scored in double-digits for Tech 10 times this season including a 16 point effort against Bluefield.
Tech men’s basketball improved to 18-11 with a win over Barber-Scotia College on February 22. Cooper scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double. Leon also threw down a few dunks during the match-up including a flawless 360 slam.
Cooper has hit double-digits for Tech in his last four games in scoring efforts, averaging 12.72 points per game this season. The Freeport, Bahamas native is studying Sports Managment as a Golden Bear.
Women’s basketball will host Bluefield State College Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Baisi Athletic Center for Senior Day while men’s basketball will be travelling to Belleville, Il. for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off against Lindenwood University-Belleville.
