BUCKLEY’S CREEK, Ky. – Belfry downed the Phelps Hornets 76-59 in first round action in the 60th District tourney at Pike County Central High School on Tuesday night.
The Pirates jumped out to an 18-10 first quarter lead and led 43-22.
Garrett Fannin fired in 28 points for the Pirates hitting 9-15 shots, including one 3-pointer and a perfect 9-9 at the free throw line.
Dawson Isom was next in line with 17 points, Cole Bentley added 9 and Nathan Copley 8 for Coach Mark Thompson. Bentley led the Pirates with 10 rebounds, while Isom dished out 4 assists.
Elijah Branham led the Hornets with 24 points, while Davon Smith chipped in 13 for Coach Bobby Varney’s squad. Matt Hatfield pulled down 11 rebounds to go with his 6 points for PHS. Steven Prater added 9 points for the Hornets.
Belfry shot 45 percent from the floor making 29-64 shots. They were 14-23 at the foul line for 61 percent. Phelps was 20-62 for 32 percent and 16-25 at the free throw line for 64 percent.
The Pirates will take on Pike County Central tonight for the 60th District championship at approximately 8:15 p.m. They play after the Lady Pirates take on the Lady Hawks in the first game at 6:00 p.m. at the PCC gym.
Regardless of whether they win or lose, this will be the 11th straight year Belfry will head into the regional tournament. In the Bluegrass State, the district runner-up advances to the next round.
Pike Central swept the two regular season games, edging the Pirates 61-59 on the road and 63-62 at home. Another close contest is expected in the 60th District final.
