GOODY, Ky. – For more than 20 years the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department has participated in the Shop with a Cop program.

Shop with a Cop provides new toys to children in need in Mingo County.

Sgt. Joe Smith has been a part of the program for 13 years.

“When I started we had about 50 kids that could spend $50 each,” Smith recalled. “Now we have 115 kids and they can spend over $100.”

Of course the children were all smiles and were wide-eyed as they strolled up and down the toy aisles.

“We would like to thank all of those companies, individuals and lawyers that gave us donations,” Smith said.

“This is good for the kids to see police officers in a positive light,” Smith said. “We want them to know we’re not the bad guys.”

Smith related that so many times kids just see the cops as persons who come to their house and arrest their parents or relatives.

All of the parents were very appreciative of the deputies and the opportunity their children had to pick out some gifts for Christmas.

Smith also thanked Walmart for assisting in the Shop with a Cop program. Their employees helped out and they had a single cash register opened up just for the Mingo County deputies and the kids.
