The Mingo County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. on the 20th on the 1st floor of the courthouse inside the County Commission Courtroom. The Tug Valley Arts Council will present contemporary Bluegrass Band Blue Highway on Thursday, November 21 at 7 p.m. at the Rose G. Smith Theater (the old Williamson High School building.)
The Tug Valley Shrine Club will meet on Thursday, the 21st, at the Williamson Masonic Lodge at 6:30 p.m. An election of officers for 2014 will be held, as well as a discussion for the Shriner’s Children’s Christmas Party. All Shrine Club members are invited to attend.
Stone Heritage will holds its regular monthly Social Meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the historic Red Robin Building. Plans for the holidays will be finalized at the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Highland Presbyterian Church at Canada, Kentucky will hold their annual fall sale on November 23rd, 2013 at the church. The church is located on Pigeon Roost Hollow just across the first bridge. The sale will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. There will be crafts such as wreaths and quilts, desserts for your Thanksgiving holiday and homemade jams and jellies. There will be other foods, main dishes, handcrafted wooden items and holiday decorations and gift items. Come and shop with us and enjoy free refreshments.
The volunteers and committee sponsoring the Toys for Joy project that will provide Christmas for needy children throughout the Tug Valley area will hold a Spaghetti dinner with all the fixins on the 23rd, at the Righteous Brew from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $30 a couple or $ 15 for a single and must be purchased in advance. The dinner will take place in a candlelight, romantic atmosphere that will include live music. Belfry High School will be hosting it’s first Annual Harvest Bazaar on Sunday November 24th from 2pm -6pm in the Commons Area. We will have local vendors as well as representatives from national Direct Selling companies such as Thirty-One, Pampered Chef, Longaberger, Premiere Jewelry and more. Admission will be $2 per person, concessions available as well as a silent auction. The Tug Valley Choral Society will present it’s annual Christmas Concert at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, located at 29 West 6th Avenue in Williamson. A reception will be held afterwards in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The public is invited to attend and the singers hope the concert will help you begin your Christmas season on a very pleasant note.

The Mingo County Democrat Women will have their annual Christmas celebration on December 7, beginning at 6:00pm. This year it will be held at the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in the main front lobby. A wonderful dinner will be catered by Food City. The band McVanHat (consisting of McCoy, Vance, and Hatfield descendants) will be entertaining for the evening. A charge of $15.00 per person or $25.00 per couple will be charged at the door. There will be door prizes given away. All members and their families and area democrats are invited and encouraged to attend and celebrate the season with us.

The Salvation Army of the Southern Coalfields needs volunteer bell ringers for the Christmas Season. The Salvation Army operates in the following counties: Logan, Boone and Mingo. The Salvation Army does our best to meet the needs of the underprivileged in the communities we live. The Kettle season is November 9th through December 24th. The Mingo County Wellness Committee will conduct quarterly meetings at the Board Office in Williamson. If you would like to join the county wellness committee, please contact the Child Nutrition Office at 304-235-7142. The purpose of the committee is to address the wellness needs of students and the school environment by working collaboratively with community agencies toward addressing identified needs. Alcoholics Anonymous - The St. Paul Espicopal Church has AA meetings Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 5th Ave. and Prichard St. in Williamson.
The GED is changing from the current paper-and-pencil test to a Computer-Based test beginning January s, 2014. The paper test will be offered for the last time on the December 2013 test date. If you have taken the GED, but not passed all of the tests, all scores will be cancelled after December 31, 2013. Thus, if you have one or more tests you still need to re-take, you must get it done not later than the December testing. The Parsley Bottom Freewill Baptist Food Pantry will continue to provide USDA commodities. The pantry gives out the food once monthly on the fourth Thursday.
