CHAPMANVILLE - In Region IV, Section II volleyball tournament action Monday night, the Mingo Central Lady Miners, seeded third in the section, beat the second seeded Wayne Pioneers, in a hard fought match that lasted five sets. The Lady Miners won the first set, by a score of 25-18, but Wayne battled back to win the second and third sets 13-25 and 22-25.
The fourth set would belong to the Miners by a score of 25 - 23, which included a rally to overcome an eight point deficit midway through the set. In the fifth and final set, the ladies from Mingo Central jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but watched the Pioneers fight back to tie the set at 8 apiece. With the score tied at 12, senior Kristyn Johnson won two service points that the Lady Miners worked hard to earn, and Johnson’s third and final serve was an ace to win the match 15-12.
Final Score: 25-18, 13-25, 22-25, 25-23, and 15-12
In the match, junior Ashley Curry lead the team’s total kills with an impressive 16; sophomore Hannah Church contributed 4; senior Kristyn Johnson 3; junior Kiearia Hammond 3, and sophomore Stacy Cisco 3. Johnson lead the Miners’ attacking game with 3, while Hammond, Curry, S. Cisco and Church contributed one each. The Lady Miners won a total of 21 points from unreturned serves, with Hammond earning 7 of those aces, Johnson 5, Church 4, Curry 1, S. Cisco, 2 and junior Brandi Cisco, 2.
In other tournament action, the fourth seeded Chapmanville Tigers beat the fifth seeded Scott Skyhawks in three straight sets, and in the night’s second round action, the Lady Tigers defeated the No. 1 seeded Lady Rebels of Tolsia High School, also in three straight sets.
