WILLIAMSON – For nearly 30 years, the GFWC-WV Williamson Woman’s Club has supported academic opportunity in the Tug Valley through its annual college scholarship award.
The club funds this award with its annual Pinto Bean Luncheon the first Friday of each November. This year is no different. The event is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Williamson.
“We look forward to this event each year,” said Woman’s Club President Leigh Ann Ray. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it when we can support our local students with a scholarship award.”
Proceeds from the event provide a $1,000 renewable scholarship to a graduating high school senior planning to attend Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and other community projects.
Tickets for the pinto bean luncheon are $5 and include beans, cornbread, slaw and dessert. Those purchasing tickets have the option of dining in the church’s fellowship hall, carrying their meals out or having them delivered. Diners will also have their choice of traditional pinto beans, white beans or vegetarian beans.
“Our vegetarian beans are growing in popularity,” Ray said. “It’s always nice to offer people a variety of choices.”
Tickets are available through Woman’s Club member or by contacting Ray at 606-794-3564 or Judy Hamrick at 304-235-2692, ext. 3.
