Retired Teachers Week was proclaimed in Pike County for October 21-27 by Pike Judge-Executive Wayne T. Rutherford.
Pike County has a very active Retired Teachers Association. Last year, Pike County Retired Teachers brought $29 million dollars into the local economy in pensions and health care. The Big Sandy District brought in $76 million.
Pike County retired teachers also donated 26,725 volunteer hours and completed two service projects. School supplies were donated to Johns Creek Elementary School Family Resource Center and food items for the Back Pack Program were donated to Mullins Elementary.
Donations were also made to the University of Pikeville and the N. O. Kimbler Memorial Scholarship Fund which gives scholarships to students attending community and technical colleges.
The PCRTA meets quarterly and the next meeting will be December 17, 10:45 a.m., at the Top of the Landmark Inn in Pikeville.
