The Belfry Pirates outslugged East Carter 10-7 at J.P. Kouns Field at East Carter on Saturday.
East Carter took the lead in the bottom of the 1st inning after Jacob Coleman doubled to center with one out. Then Austin Wells walked and Cody McDavid singled to short right field, loading bases. That’s when Cole Braggs brought in two runs with a single to right. Derek Keller smacked an RBI triple in the gap to center field to bring in a third run for the Raiders.
In the top of the 2nd inning, Belfry’s Eli Huddle led off with a bunt single between mound and the third base line. He advanced to third base on two passed balls. Zac Fields then brought in the run with an RBI groundout to second base to cut the lead to 3-1.
Belfry tied the game in the 3rd inning. With two outs, Zack Francisco singled to deep third, Joey Duty was hit by a pitch and Eli Huddle smashed a double to center, getting a pair of RBIs to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the inning, East Carter’s Wells singled to left field, but was forced out at second by a grounder by McDavid. McDavid scored on the grounder to shortstop by Keller after a Boggs single. This gave the Raiders a 4-3 lead.
In the 4th inning, Fields led off with a single to left for the Pirates. Garrett Fannin came in as a pinch runner. Caleb Stanley sacrificed Fannin to second, then Sean Hurley walked.
Reed Williamson then lined a double to left field to bring in a pair of runs. Zack Francisco singled to deep short, then Duty had an RBI single to right field and Huddle picked up two more RBIs with a single to left field. The Pirates got five runs with the rally.
In the 6th inning, Belfry’s Hurley led off with a double to center field and then Keaton Taylor beat out a bunt single in front of the 2nd baseman. Both runs scored on a 2-out error as Huddle reached first, but he was not credited with any RBI’s.
In the 7th inning, East Carter’s Conner Staton, led off with a walk with one out, Wells then singled to left field and McDavid cracked an RBI single to left.
Belfry’s Williamson replaced Fields as pitcher for the Pirates. Boggs had an RBI single to center field as McDavid scored on a one-out fielder’s choice Matt Rodgers.
But, the Pirates were able to hold on for the 3-run lead.
Belfry is 13-15 on the season and was scheduled to travel to Allen Central on Monday and hit the road again today to play at Lawrence County on Thursday and at Sheldon Clark on Friday.
The 60th District tournament starts Monday, May 20, as Belfry hosts Phelps. The winner will play Pike Central on Wednesday, May 22.
