GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates got back on the winning track as they sailed by visiting Sheldon Clark with a 5-0 shutout victory at home on Monday evening.
Sheldon Clark actually loaded the bases in the 1st inning, but Belfry was able to work out of the jam and keep the Cards from scoring.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, with one out, Eli Huddle walked on four pitches. Joey Duty walked on a 3-2 count after Huddle stole second base and third base. Then shortstop Zack Francisco walked, loading the bases. Huddle scored on fielder’s choice by Reed Williamson, who reached safely at first. The fielder tried to get Duty at third base.
In 5th inning, Belfry came up with a 3-run rally.
Huddle led off with bunt single between the mound and the first base line. Duty singled to right field and then Francisco was safe at first on an error by the third baseman Cody Cooper. Huddle scored on and an error by the first baseman Brandon Butcher. Francisco went to second base on an error by the catcher Brady Cline, who was trying to throw out Duty at third base. There were three errors by the Cardinals on same play.
Williamson then had an RBI single to left field which scored Duty. Then a Zac Fields grounder to first base scored Francisco making it 4-0.
The Pirates got an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th inning. With two outs, Huddle singled to deep short and then Duty singled to right field. Francisco singled to left field to bring home Huddle.
Dustin Jewell picked up the win on the mound for Belfry coach Michael Hagy. Jewell pitched a complete game 4-hit shutout. He had 11 strikeouts and only walked two batters.
Ethan Osborne took the loss on the hill for the Cards.
Belfry improved to 10-13 on the season. They were scheduled to play at Johnson Central on Tuesday and at Logan, W.Va. on Wednesday. They host East Ridge on Thursday and Allen Central on Friday.
Sheldon Clark dropped to 4-20 on the season.
