Stephen Mallie Blackburn, 24, of Carbondale, Il., formerly of Williamson, passed away in Carbondale on Thursday, April 18, 2013.
Born July 20, 1988, at South Williamson, Ky., he was the beloved son of Gary Blackburn and Sandra Hopkins Blackburn of Oreana, Il., also formerly of Williamson.
Mallie is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mallie and Nina Adkins Blackburn; his maternal grandfather, Alex Hopkins and two cousins, Jeff Smith and Captain Dave Hopkins.
Mallie was a 2006 graduate of Williamson High School. He went on to attend Millikin University, where he graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Mallie also attended Southern Illinois University and earned a degree in computer science.
Mallie spent much of his time involved in computer research. He was also a tremendous Jeep Cherokee buff and enjoyed off-roading activities.
He was a member of the East Williamson Baptist Church.
Mallie was deeply loved by his entire family. He will be sorely missed and lovingly thought of and remembered always.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Orlean Hopkins of Forest Hills, Ky.; his uncles and aunts, Dr. Gary and Joyce Hopkins of Forest Hills, Ky.; Karen and Danny Kennedy of Williamson and Sue and Larry Whitehead of Barboursville; a special cousin to whom he was very close, Carla and her husband, Stephen Griesch of Lexington, Ky., and his lifelong friend, Charles Mark Turk.
Mallie is also survived by a host of loving cousins and extended family members.
The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday evening, April 22, at Weaver Mortuary, in West Williamson. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at the mortuary. The Rev. Allen Shouse officiated.
Interment was in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.. Pallbearers included Gary Blackburn, Dr. Gary Hopkins, John Smith, Jimmy Webb, Paul David Stafford, Patrick Whitehead and Charles Mark Turk.
