WINCO BLOCK - Water from a clogged culvert is being blamed by residents for an accident that sent five people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
While details were sketchy about the accident, it appears a 2003 Windstar van was traveling north on US 52 at Winco Block when the vehicle hydroplaned on water in the road. The driver lost control, it is believed, went into the ditch and struck a telephone pole, which was broken in half. The van came to rest in the ditch.
“This is the second car I’ve seen lose control on the water today,” Winco Block resident Tim Craven said. “The other car thankfully didn’t wreck. This spot is really dangerous, even coal trucks lose control here.”
Lenore Fire Department responded at the scene, as well as the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department. Two adults, a male and a female, and three children were transported to Appalachian Regional Hospital. The extent of their injuries was unknown. It is believed the adults were not wearing seatbelts, although one infant was in a carseat and was not injured.
