WEST WILLIAMSON – The Tug Valley Panthers lost Friday night at Westside and they weren’t about to lose in back-to-back nights. However, they had to claw back against an athletic Riverside team in the nightcap of the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout played at the historic Williamson Fieldhouse.
When all was said and done, the Panthers beat the Warriors 74 to 65.
Tug Valley trailed 23-16 after one quarter and 36-31 at the half. Tug Valley outscored Riverside 22-18 to cut into the lead and trailed by a point, 54-53 after three quarters.
The senior trio of Austin Brewer, Mikey Newsome and Aaron Muncy had good offensive nights for the Panthers. Brewer fired in 25 points, Newsome 18 and Munch 14 for coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson. Junior Thomas Baisden chipped in 11 points and had six rebounds. Hayden Sturgell added four for the Panthers.
“They had a good team,” Thompson said of Riverside. “I think we might have had a little hangover – especially in the first half, since we played Friday night at Westside.”
Tyus Wood fired in 22 points for Riverside, while Marcus Reed was next in line with 17. Tim Womack fired in 11 for the Warriors and Nick Light had nine.
Tug Valley was cold from long range only hitting 2-of-12 from behind the arc for 17 percent, and they made 24-59 from the field for 41 percent. The Panthers were also cool at the free throw line, especially early in the game, connecting on 22-35 for 63 percent.
Riverside made 5-12 from 3-point range and 22-46 overall from the floor for 48 percent. They made 16-19 at the charity stripe for 84 percent.
“We played better defense and our shot selection was better in the second half,” Thompson added. “We also rebounded better.”
“We get everybody’s best shot,” Thompson said. The Panthers have another busy week. They travel up Corridor G to take on the Logan Wildcats tonight. They head back to Logan on Friday to play Greenbrier East at 7:30 p.m. in the Coalfield Classic and they return home Saturday night to take on the Man Hillbillies.
