JENKINS, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates went on the road for their first game of the season and defeated Jenkins 65-55.
Coach Randy Casey was pleased with the win. Several of his players have only been practicing basketball a few days because of Belfry’s late run into the football playoffs.
“This was a good road win tonight. We overcame some foul trouble, injuries and a 16 point deficit to win by ten. I think we showed our character and toughness especially in the second half,” said Casey.
Belfry trailed 28-17 at the half, but outscored the Cavaliers 48 to 27 in the second half to overcome the deficit.
Tony Messer, a 6-foot-5 senior post player, led Belfry with 21 points. Brett Charles, a senior guard, fired in 19 points. Sean Hurley added six, Cameron Johnson four and Kaleb Edwards 2 for the Pirates.
Jenkins placed four players in double digits led by Koty Sexton with 14.
Belfry’s next game will be in the Coalfield Shootout at the Madison (W.Va.) Civic Center where they will take on Berwyck, Pennsylvania.
