NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Southern announced today the company is facing layoffs that will affect employees in Williamson.
Robin Chapman, Director of Public Relations with NS, told the Daily News he could not say how many local employees will be laid off.
“We are furloughing 200 employees in our coal service area,” Chapman said. “That includes Southern West Virginia and Western Virginia. This is due to the weakness currently facing the coal market.”
He went on to say it was uncertain how many local employees would lose their jobs due to the seniority system used by the railroad.
“We are offering any employee who is furloughed a permanent position in another location,” Chapman said.
Those locations were Chicago, Toledo and Cleveland in Ohio, Conway, Altoona and Harrisburg, Pa., and Elkhart, Ind.
The Daily News will provide additional information as it becomes available.
