Homecoming week is one that is always highly anticipated by all students. It’s not just about the football game, or the crowning of the queen at halftime. It’s so much more. Homecoming week is jam packed with fun activities for the students and a presentation of the spirit we have at school to the community.
The first thing that’s going on this week is “dress up days.” Basically, it’s a week where you can come to school looking really strange and you’ll get compliments on how cool your outfit is. For example, on Monday everyone is allowed to come to school in their pajamas. The theme for the day is put the warriors to sleep. Tuesday will be attack on the frontier where we’re given the choice of dressing as a cowboy/cowgirl or an Indian. Wednesday is outsmarting the warriors and everyone is encouraged to dress like a stereotypical nerd. Thursday is blind the competition where any neon clothes will be acceptable. As always, Friday is Red day. All students are encouraged to participate as long as their school spirit doesn’t conflict with the dress code.
Traditionally, each homeroom would decorate their door during homecoming week, now we’re switching to half shower curtains. This is because it’s a much easier medium to work with. Gluing and painting things onto a vertical door tends to be rather difficult. Each homeroom will decorate a shower curtain with a theme encouraging the Pirates to defeat the Warriors. It’s always highly competitive, and each year there are always some very unique ideas. At the end of the week they are judged and the winners will be hung on the field game night. Also, a prize awarded to the winning homerooms.
On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. we will be hosting a celebrity look-alike contest. Anyone enrolled in Belfry High interested in participating is welcomed. There will be a $3 admission for anyone who would like to attend this intentionally humorous event. This is a substitute for the old mock homecoming. Then, On Thursday during the last two classes of the day, we will be hosting the homecoming games in the gym. For a dollar, students can participate or speculate in game show inspired activities.
Finally on Friday night is the homecoming game against East Ridge. This is a district game so it’s important to our players to receive another victory. Also, the homecoming festivities will be held at halftime. The court will take their place on the field and this year’s queen will be announced. After the game, the school is hosting its annual homecoming dance where everyone has a chance to meet with queen and her court and just hang out. There will be a professional DJ and the homecoming committee has organized other fun events for those students who don’t love to dance. It will be a great end to a great week that everyone has been looking forward to for nearly a month.
